Max Chance, a fifty-four-year-old burly and acerbic artist in Chattanooga, Tennessee, stops the sexual assault of a stranger in an alley behind a bar. The victim, a beautiful young woman, happily says Max’s name then suddenly dies, the victim of poisoning. Who was she? Why was she in Chattanooga? Who killed her? And how did she know Max?
Before Max can get too deep into an investigation of the dead woman, Max’s best friend, Stacy (for whom Max has long not-so-secretly pined), asks her to figure out what sort of meetings Stacy’s husband, Blake, has been secretly attending. That evening, Max follows him and stumbles upon a clandestine gathering of the city’s richest and most powerful men. She doesn't know it at the time but, by crashing that party, sheput an executioner's target on her back and on the back of the woman she loves.
